In early 2009, Renault returned to South Africa (SA) as a local manufacturer for the first time in over 30 years with its SA debut of the 5 door hatchback Renault Sandero. The last locally assembled model - the first-generation Renault 5 - was produced for the final time on South African soil in the mid 70s. This new era in Renault SA can be credited to the innovative Renault-Nissan alliance that spearheaded the current manufacturing of Sandero cars at the Nissan SA plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria. This has fast made the Sandero an economically efficient car to maintain for South African drivers, as parts are now manufactured – and are readily available - locally.
