Four easy ways to get your vehicle ready for winter

Our CMH Renault Technicians suggest that vehicle batteries are always trickier during this time, as the starter draws increased amps to crack a cold engine. Many people also forget to turn off their headlights, which drains battery power. To avoid this, a battery in good working condition is essential. Remember that in cold weather a fully charged battery provides less than half the power it does in warm weather.

In addition, the following tips are suggested:

1: Batteries

Refill car battery in winter

Check the water (electrolyte) level Water must cover the fluid plates and, if necessary, top it up. Use only distilled water (water that is boiled and allowed to cool). Avoid overfilling and clean any spillage.

Keep the battery clean

Clean the terminals with warm (not hot) soapy water and remove any acid or dirt build-up, which can cause the battery to self-discharge quicker.

Secure the battery

Make sure the battery is secured properly and not moving around under the bonnet.

Charge the battery regularly

If you normally drive only short distances or use your car infrequently, you may need to take a longer (one-hour) drive each week to ensure the battery stays charged. Shorter trips, or excessive idling, are not enough to charge the battery and will shorten its lifespan.

Switch off before you switch on

Switch all other devices in your vehicle off before your switch the car on. These include the air-conditioner, radio, lights, seat warmers, windscreen wipers, and demisters.

Alternator belts

Check the belts for fraying or cracking. A loose alternator belt is a common cause of battery failure.

Service your car
Lube services

Poor engine condition can overload the battery, so ensuring your car is maintained according to the manufacturer’s specifications will extend the battery’s life. If you struggle to start your vehicle, do not crank the engine continuously as this may damage the starter, battery, and other electronic components.

2: Tyres

Wheel balancing

Tyres are one of the most crucial safety features on vehicles, and they must always be in good condition. Worn tyres are extremely dangerous in all conditions, but this danger can be multiplied in wet, snowy, or icy conditions. Vehicle owners must check their owner’s manual to determine the correct pressure to inflate to and within the manufacturer’s guidelines. This will ensure optimal road holding and extend the tyre’s life. “Vehicle owners are reminded that the law requires tyres to be in good condition and they may face stiff penalties if they are found to be substandard. The law requires tyres to have a tread of at least one millimetre; some tyres already have tread wear indicators which make determining this easier. A worn tyre should never be repaired, it must always be replaced for your, and other road users’ safety,” urges our CMH Renault Tyre Expert.

The association also advises vehicle owners that insurance policies require vehicles to be in roadworthy condition, and that worn tyres may void that condition which may lead to a repudiation of claims in the event of a crash.

3: Visibility

As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, many motorists will leave for work in the morning while it is still dark outside, requiring the use of headlights. It is essential to check that the vehicle’s headlights are working properly.

Switch off the headlights when you reach your destination, as you may have left them on after the sun came out during your journey. Park facing a wall if you can, the reflection of the lights will act as a reminder to switch them off.

If your car is parked outside overnight, you may have a layer of frost on the windscreen. Do not use warm water to clean this layer, as your windscreen may crack. Instead, use a scraper (an old credit card will do) to remove the ice. Using the air-conditioner to demist the interior of the car will also help. Make sure it is clear before you drive.

Avoid using the windscreen sprayers when driving in cold conditions as the water from the reservoir will freeze onto the windscreen, and the wipers will not be able to clear the ice.

Our CMH Renault Midrand Technicians also advise us to, “Check the condition of your wiper blades and replace them if needed and avoid cleaning mud and soil from the windscreen with the wipers as these can scratch the glass. If possible, park your car undercover at night to ensure your windscreen remains clear the next morning.”

Apart from vehicle safety checks, the Auto Mobile of South Africa (AA) also appeals to motorists, runners, cyclists, and pedestrians to be aware of different road conditions during winter, and the need for increased visibility during this time.

“Runners, cyclists and pedestrians are vulnerable during this time because decreased natural lighting – and the real possibility that streetlights aren’t working – means that other road users are less visible. Anyone who is on the road must ensure they are visible by wearing high-visibility attire. All road users must make every effort to see and be seen when they are on the road,” says the Auto Mobile of South Africa (AA).

4: Security

In addition to vehicle safety, the association says shorter days and longer nights may increase the need for greater personal security. According to Auto Mobile of South Africa (AA), opportunistic criminals use any chance they can to pounce. Days that get darker sooner provide a perfect opportunity for criminals to operate under darkness, and unsuspecting victims may find out too late that they need protection.

Battery Terminal Corrosion – Causes, Fixes & Prevention

What Causes Corrosion

Battery terminal corrosion is commonly seen as a white-blue or greenish powder that gathers around the positive- and negative-battery posts, well our CMH Renault Midrand Workshop Technicians suggest that corrosion is generally caused by hydrogen gas (which is released from the battery while charging), along with moisture and other salts / minerals in the atmosphere, all of which combine to create a corrosive environment. In many cases, it’s believed that the corrosion will typically form around the negative terminal, which suggests that the battery is “undercharging” due to a lack of adequate driving time. Corrosion around the positive terminal is generally believed to be the result of overcharging from the alternator. Either way, any form of battery terminal corrosion will eventually lead to poor conductivity, high electrical resistance, reduced lifespan, and ultimately the inability to deliver enough energy to start the engine.

Overcharging

If your alternator is slightly overcharging your car battery, it might cause corrosion on your car battery terminals. Check your voltage with a multi-meter when your car runs to make sure it is not charging over 14.5 volts when you are revving the engine. It can also be because you are frequently charging your car battery with a car battery charger too hard.

Overfilling the battery

If you overfill your car battery, it might cause the electrolyte to leak out, as mentioned before. Not all car batteries are refillable, but you should absolutely double-check if you have one so it is not overfilled.

Hydrogen Gas Leakage

The battery turns acid into an electric current. There are moments that the hydrogen gas in the battery leaks and finds its way into the atmosphere. It reacts with other substances, and you get battery terminal corrosion. Depending on which side it forms, you can diagnose various battery problems. If it is on the negative terminal, this is a sign of undercharging, while if it is on the positive terminal, it is due to overcharging.

How To Prevent Battery Corrosion

Although some mechanics use grease or Vaseline to cover the battery’s terminals, our amazing of team of experts at our CMH Renault Workshop can guarantee you that these substances attract dirt. Needless to say, a gradual build-up of dirt and dust can also contribute to poor electrical contact. According to CRC Industries RSA (Pty) Ltd – trading as CRC & Q20 South Africa the correct product to use is CRC’S BATTERY TERMINAL PROTECTOR, which is one of a lead-free soft coating that’s specifically designed to protect battery terminals from corrosion.

  • Prolong battery life
  • Guarantee successful charging and maintenance
  • Assure easy starting
  • Prevent corrosion

How To Apply:

  • Shake can well before use
  • Clean away existing corrosion with it/li>
  • Apply an even coat to freshly cleaned hold-downs, bolts, brackets and terminals/li>
  • For preventative maintenance: reapply when the red film turns clear/li>
So now, when we fixed the car battery terminals’ corrosion, what can we do to make sure that it will not happen again? Because a leaking car battery causes a lot of battery corrosion, you may need to replace your car battery to prevent it from happening again soon. Car Batteries are anyways recommended to replace every 5 years always to keep them in good condition.

Copper compression terminals

These clamps are one of the best in the market and will help prevent further battery terminal corrosion. The clamps are made from tinned copper and ensure that the whole clamp comes into contact with the electric current.

Battery charging

One of the causes of battery terminal corrosion is a battery that is overcharged or undercharged. The manufacturer’s manual often has the recommended battery voltage. Make sure you are not charging it too hard with your car battery charger. Also, check the voltage when the car is revving on idle with a multi-meter. If the alternator is charging over 14.5 volts, there is something wrong with it.

It was a great pleasure for CMH Renault Midrand to be part of the 2019 Bastille Day at Waterfall Market by Mall of Africa on the 14 of July. For those who do not know a Bastille Day is a special French day that is celebrated all around the world on the 14 July, bastille is a common name given in English-speaking countries to the national day of France. CMH Renault Midrand was the only Dealer that had our fantastic cars on display that day, to take advantage of such a beautiful & fun event. With different stalls from Food all the way to art, CMH Renault Midrand had clients locked to our display with the amazing vehicles on show. Our Sales team where loaded with applications and enquiries while they also enjoyed the remarkable food and entertainment.
